History

The Primary is located next to the former Craigmillar Primary School, a "B" grade listed building which is now known as "SPACE", the Craigmillar social enterprise and arts centre.

SPACE provides a centre of excellence for social enterprises and has offices, training facilities, meeting places and a children’s nursery. There is a community arts space plus a gallery and theatre.

historyThe old primary school has been a landmark in Craigmillar since it was opened in 1933 and features a "Childrens games and Amusements" mural by Scottish artist John Maxwell. This has recently been uncovered and restored. In fact, the presence of the mural saved the landmark building from the bulldozer.

Craigmillar Community Arts host workshops in the building with children and young people engaging more fully with the artwork on display and interpret it in new ways. A grant from the Scottish Arts Council enabled the former hall to be refurbished as a theatre.
